The influences on the culture from mod clothing

By Sisi Tsoi

Retro garments from the 1950s and 60s are making a comeback. From flowing A-line style skirts for women, to specially designed suits and thin ties for men, it has never been cooler to dress like a mod.

Mod clothing is a style that was distinguished in the 1960s. Blokes who wore Mod clothing wore well tailored suits, classy leather shoes and fur-lined parka coats. It was most definitely popular in the south of the United Kingdom - specifically London and Brighton. Today, you'll find Mod clothing in boutique shops and in major clothes stores - especially on London's Carnaby Street.

True vintage Mod clothing is quite difficult to find and quite expensive, particularly if the item is in good overall condition. If you're short of a truly vintage suit, check ebay or visit vintage shops in London, Brighton or your nearest massive town. Ask the person working there if they have anything from the 1950s or 60s in stock. Even if they do not, they can aim you in the right direction.

The Mod style is easily copied by looking in high street stores or shopping in designer outlets that specialize in that style, or by choosing items that imitate the look. For men, lengthy thin ties and a well fitted suit in brown or gray will give you a 'mod' look. For woman, a miniskirt and sweater, or a short dress in a solid bold color with a belt across the waist. A short bob haircut or half beehive and side swept fringe will complete the look. The high street chain Peacocks often sell mod style dresses, and SirenLondon's designer clothing store is an excellent source of mod style clothing. It's very kind to your budget, very well made and well worth the money if you want the mod look.

The mod clothing style is similar to styles in the 1920s and 30s, when it was normal to see men dressed in suits. Today, men often only dress in suits for work, and informal attire is jeans and t-shirts, which looks less formal and so relaxed. The mod clothing style was all about exploring different styles and cuts. Liam and Noel Gallagher are known to dress in the mod style, as well as Paul Weller and the band the Rifles.
